Healthy Gums

Why are healthy gums so important?

Healthy gums are so important because they are a gateway to our overall health.

How can I tell if my gums are healthy or unhealthy?

You can tell if your gums are healthy or unhealthy at home by checking if they bleed or if they are sensitive. But a more accurate way to know is to visit us here at Bailey Dental Group, and we will do a gum check and evaluate your overall gum health.

What causes unhealthy gums?

There are a number of factors that may cause unhealthy gums such as neglected home care, genetics, smoking, and certain medications.

Can unhealthy gums be fixed?

Absolutely, unhealthy gums can always be fixed. That is our goal here at Bailey Dental Group, with the care that we provide and your home care.

What is involved in the process of a deep cleaning?

In a deep cleaning, or scaling and group cleaning, we first do a gum check and assess the health of the bone level in your mouth. If the pockets are deep or there's tartar under the gum, we will do the deep cleaning. We use topical anesthetics to ensure it's comfortable for you while we remove the toxins and tartar buildup.

Why does it take more than one sitting for a dental cleaning?

Sometimes, it may take more than one appointment for the deep cleaning because there may be a lot of tartar and bacteria buildup. It can also depend on the patient and how diseased the gum tissue is and how much bone loss there is.

Is a deep dental cleaning painful?

Our goal is to ensure that the deep cleaning is not uncomfortable. We use topical anesthetics to ensure patient comfort which is our top priority here at Bailey Dental Group.

What are the best ways to take care of my gums at home after a scaling?

The best ways to take care of your gums after a scaling are to floss at least once a day, use an electric toothbrush twice a day and use rinses. We often prescribe Therasol, an antibacterial rinse, for the best home care.

At what point is gum grafting necessary?

Gum grafting is necessary when a patient starts to feel sensitive because of gum loss where there's not enough healthy tissue to support the tooth or when your dentist recommends it.
